MATTHEWS, YOUNG Welcomes Ben Berry

Ben BerryD. Ben Berry, formerly of First American Financial Management and Gateway Financial Corporation, has joined the firm as a Principal in the firm’s Strategic Services practice. Mr. Berry will work out of his Tidewater Virginia home office, giving the firm its first presence in the Virginia market.

Prior to joining Matthews, Young & Associates, Inc., Mr. Berry was President and CEO of First American Financial Management, a bank holding company formed to acquire banks. During the period between 1998 and 2009, Berry organized and built Gateway Bank from $12MM of seed capital into the seventh largest financial institution in North Carolina with 37 offices and $2.2 Billion of assets at the time the Bank was merged into the Norfolk, VA based Hampton Roads Bankshares, Inc.

Mr. Berry will manage Matthews, Young’s Strategic Services practice which includes strategic planning, regulatory orders remediation, capital planning, governance consulting and other strategic areas. A graduate of Chowan College, Mr. Berry has also completed a number of graduate banking schools. Prior to organizing Gateway Bank, he spent 24 years in a variety of roles with Centura Bank and its predecessor, Peoples Bank & Trust Co of Rocky Mount, NC, culminating in the role as Senior Vice President & Regional Executive for Eastern North Carolina and Tidewater Virginia Markets.

We are excited to have Mr. Berry joining our Firm. He is highly respected among bankers and regulators alike. This is a significant expansion of our Firm’s capacity to serve our clients in some very strategic areas.

O'Rourke Will Address the Georgia Bankers Association's Annual Convention

J. Timothy O'Rourke, President & CEO of the Firm, will address the Georgia Bankers Association's Annual Convention in Charleston, SC on June 14, 2010. The title of the speech is "Hey America, We Don’t Like Bonuses Either, But Incentive Compensation Makes Sense!." Asset quality problems, depressed earnings, TARP restrictions, governmental scolding, funding difficulties and the like have made many banks give up on incentive compensation plans. However, one CEO recently said, “I need incentives for my staff more now than ever before.” Unlike the bonuses we keep reading about, well-designed incentives can be extremely helpful, even in tough times.

O'Rourke to Speak at NCBA Bank Directors Assembly on Management Succession

Tim O'Rourke, President & CEO of the Firm, will address the North Carolina Bankers Association's annual Bank Directors Assembly in Greensboro, NC on March 8, 2010. The title of the speech is "Succession Planning Without Three Envelopes." Whether it involves the traditional three envelopes or not, ensuring management succession is key to sustaining any business.  This is a key role for the Board and regulators are asking to see the Plan. O'Rourke will discuss today's best practices in Management Succession processes.

Hamilton Delivers "Negotiations" Workshop for Nash County, NC Chamber of Commerce

Mike Hamilton, Principal and Director of Executive Search, Development and Outplacement, presented a workshop at Nash Tech Community College for the Nash County, NC Chamber of Commerce on January 28, 2010. The workshop was called "Introduction to Negotiations – Using Persuasion and Influencing Skills."

August 19th Community Bank Leadership Workshop Was Well Received

On August 19th, 2009, community banking leadership teams met with us in Greensboro to share insights about:

  • Managing Commercial Real Estate Loans  - David Ruffin of Credit Risk Management led a panel including: Joe Hoge from StellarOne Bank, Joe Towell from Yadkin Valley Bank and John Thompson from First Sentinel Bank.

  • Managing Interest Rate Risk – Greg Gibson from Mountain 1st Bank led a panel with Joe Lampron from Peoples Bank and Bob Buchanan from First Sentinel Bank.

  • Understanding the current Regulatory environment – Jewell Hoover led regulator panelists: Mike Morgan from FDIC, Kent Stone from the OCC, and Ray Grace from the NC Banking Commissioners Office.

  • Economic Trends and Conditions – Bringing it “Back together” How today’s  successful Community Banks “Fix” on key strategic targets -  Tim O’Rourke from Matthews, Young led this discussion.

  • Is your Executive team ready for today’s complex environment? Techniques of high impact Executive Team development – Mike Hamilton from Matthews, Young led this discussion.

  • How do we pay key performers in this environment? Executive & Senior Team compensation in the new world of Banking. Tim O’Rourke, David Jones and Randy McGraw from Matthews, Young led this discussion.

MATTHEWS, YOUNG ADDS LOCATION AND PRINCIPAL

David JonesMatthews, Young has announced today that David W. Jones, formerly of Silverton Bank, has joined the firm as Principal in the Executive Compensation practices.  He is also opening the Firm’s new Atlanta, Georgia office.

Mr. Jones is returning to Matthews, Young where he began his consulting career and, as a Principal consultant, led the firm’s compensation consulting practice. Most recently, he was a Senior Vice President and Principal in the Consulting Division of Silverton Bank, leading the Executive Compensation consulting practice. Mr. Jones was also a Principal in the executive compensation consulting practice of Mercer Human Resource Consulting for over 15 years. A cum laude graduate of Davidson College, David holds an MBA from Duke University. He is a member of WorldatWork and has held accreditation as a Certified Compensation Professional since 1983.  With over 30 years in consulting, Mr. Jones has worked in a variety of industries as well as addressing the particular needs of SEC-reporting, privately-held, S-corp. and De Novo banks. He specializes in the evaluation, design, and implementation of all aspects of executive and outside director compensation programs. Mr. Jones is frequently retained to evaluate the appropriateness of executive compensation and equity arrangements in light of business performance and returns to shareholders.

Matthews, Young to Process Virginia Bankers Association's Annual Compensation Survey

We are pleased to announce that the Virginia Bankers Association has selected our Firm to design and process their annual Compensation and Benefits Survey beginning with the 2008 edition. This will be the fourth state banking association survey we provide annually. This survey, like the other state level surveys are combined into our regional survey as well. New Innovations
Our Salary Administration, Budgeting and Control Software has been converted from a spreadsheet system to a menu-driven, database system. We are excited about providing it to clients that use our services for managing annual base salary systems. The new software makes maintenance of your systems much easier and less error prone.

An increasing number of our clients are meeting with us on-line through our Matthews, Young On-Line Meeting Space, saving fees for travel time, as well as travel expenses. While there is nothing like an initial face-to-face meeting, on-line meetings can be very effective for exploring models, reviewing interim reports and other materials. We continue to try to find ways to deliver our services through high-touch, high-tech methods.

(October, 2007) Kenneth A. Snyder joined the Firm as a Compensation Analyst and Associate Consultant after a 19 year career in the telecom industry, a few years in the mortgage business and four more years of entrepreneurial experience with his own business. Initially, Mr. Snyder will be devoting his effort to helping clients maintain salary administration systems with market pricing information, salary structure development and merit increase processes. Over time, he will broaden his practice to support other forms of compensation and strategic planning research. We are pleased to welcome Kenny and look forward to introducing him to our clients.

Mike Hamilton, Senior Consultant, is celebrating his 10th anniversary with Matthews, Young this year!

Tim O'Rourke, President and CEO, has taught Executive Compensation and Strategic Planning at the FDIC's Directors Colleges for many years, and he lectured again on those topics at the FDIC/South Carolina Bankers Association Directors College this Fall.
